Soldiers' Trenches

Location type

Name and dates

Soldiers' Trenches (1763-)

Opened on the Tourist - Attractions.

Description

A series of trenches dug by soldiers in 1763 can be seen on the west side of the line between the former Gorton [WHR] station and Abhainn Duibhe Viaduct, to the north.

These drainage ditches were an attempt to bring the moorland into farm use. This was not successful.

The trenches were cut through by the embankment of the West Highland Railway.
